K-12 Program

What is the K-12 Program?

USGIF provided an engaging K-12 program at GEOINT 2018 for Tampa-area students to experience and explore the GEOINT tradecraft and Symposium. Through this program, students are able to open their minds to GEOINT and consider the field as a possible career opportunity.

Agenda

Sunday, April 22
Tampa-Area High School Students
GEOINT Foreword Poster Session

Monday, April 23
8th Grade, Stewart Middle School
8 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.

Tuesday, April 24
5th Grade, Shorecrest Preparatory School
10 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.

Portable Planet
USGIF will debut an interactive map of North America at the Symposium: USGIF’s Portable Planet. The 35-by-26 foot map is an educational tool that not only teaches K-8 students about maps and geography but also allows them to practice critical thinking, spatial analysis, and teamwork skills.

Earthball
Earthball is lending us their 10-foot giant inflatable globe to display at the convention center. Students will get to do some satellite imagery analysis and mapping activities using the Earthball as a learning tool and guide.

Exhibit Hall Booth Tour
Thank you to our sponsors AGI, BAE Systems, and Maxar (with more exhibitors to be announced soon!). The students will get to visit each of these company’s booths, see demos, and try out their technology to learn about every facet of GEOINT.

Speakers’ Corner
A casual presentation where leaders in the GEOINT Community will talk about how they got to where they are today in their careers, why it’s important to be involved in STEM, and the challenges of having a career in STEM.

Hexagon Geospatial Workshop
On Monday, April 23, Students from Stewart Middle School will get to learn how to use Hexagon’s Smart M.App software and play an interactive online game where they have to create their own map of an amusement park. This activity will teach the students how to think geospatially when creating a map, while using critical thinking to make informed decisions about their amusement park.

GEOINT 2018 attendees are welcome to stop by the “EdGEOcation Station” (next to the bag pick-up at the TCC front entrance) to listen in and see the action.
